Sights in Lisbon

 

Lisbon the capital of Portugal is a good choice for romantic holiday break or weekend. It offers memorable mix of sightseeing and activities which may satiate even the hardest-to-please tourist. The city is full of exciting travel experiences, such as hilltop castles, beautiful scenery, gardens etc. Lisbon is full of historical art, architecture and traditions. It is considered as one of the best enjoyable destination of Europe with calm and composed atmosphere, cultural diversity along with magnificent architecture. Lisbon is situated around seven low hills beside river Tagus . The place is full of fascinating monuments and museums. It takes the pride of having longest suspension bridge of Europe .

 

If you are interested in seeing glorious art exhibitions, better visit museums. In Museum do Chiado you can find numerous Portuguese and French Art. Museum do Carme has range of archaeological collection of different periods. This was founded on the ruins of ancient monastery. In the Palace of onde Alvor near Belem is situated the National Museum of Ancient Art. It is the most magnificent museum of Portugal contains 65 halls, which adorns variety of sculptors and paintings of Portuguese artists along with evolved mixture of arts during Portuguese colonies. These places are time consuming, but must to be seen.

 

Another place worth visiting is Eduardo VII Park; it is nearby Marques de Pombal Square . This was developed to commemorate British King Eduardo VII's visit to Lisbon in 1903. Gym Pavillion Carlos Lopez also provides sightseeing view with its beautiful decoration on the outside with smooth tiles. The green house Estufa Fria also brings you near to the nature with variety of plants brought from all over the world. The Botanical Garden has widest variety of plant species along with banana and palm trees. It was founded in 1873. The Tapada da Ajuda Park is spread around 200 acres, some times ago was used for hunting but now has large amusement area, children's park and an Astronomy Observatory.

 

Lisbon is a venue of hills and a good way to enjoy a panoramic view is to climb at any of the seven hills – Sao Jorge, Senhora do Monte, Santa Catarina, Graca, Estrela, Penha de Franca, Sao Pedro Alcantara. The splendid castle, Castelo de Sao Jorge is located on the top of Sao Jorge hill. It spreads mesmerizing view during sun sets over the river Tagus . If time allows, it's really wonderful to explore Oporto city, situated on the bank of river Douro . It gives you a glimpse of old and new features of the town.

 

Last but not the least, try to avoid visiting Lisbon and Oporto on Monday. On this day several sights remain closed including Sintra's Pena Palace and Museum do Chiado. But, if your itinerary does not permit you to do so, don't get depressed, you have lots of places to satisfy yourself. Science Museum near Science University , Eduardo VII Park is open and the National Museum of Ancient Art has free entrance on Sundays.
